FORTNUM & Mason is opening its first foreign shop in the shadow of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper.

The retailer will stock its famous hampers and install tea rooms in the three-storey Dubai store, which is due to open at the end of February.

While Fortnums has dozens of overseas stockists, the firm said this is the first time in its 306-year history that it has opened a standalone shop outside the UK.

It will work with Al Khayyat Investments in Dubai to set up the branch.

“We feel the mix of Fortnum’s traditions and the vibrancy of Dubai will be a powerful combination,” said Fortnum’s chief executive Ewan Venters.

Fortnums branched out from its Piccadilly base last month by opening an outlet in King’s Cross St Pancras station.
