THE WORLDWIDE video games market will grow to $93bn (£58bn) this year, an increase of 18 per cent from 2012, led by the incredible growth in smartphone gaming.
Mobile and smartphone gaming is set to grow 40 per cent this year, to $13.2bn, and will overtake PC games and handheld video games to become the second largest market in video gaming by 2015, according to research from Gartner.
“The mobile game category will show the biggest growth due to the entertainment value provided by games compared with other app categories,” said research director Brian Blau.
“This growth is fuelled by healthy premium mobile device sales globally and a desire by consumers to play games on these multifunction devices that are capable of displaying increasingly sophisticated game content.”
Gartner predicts that the video games market will grow 40 per cent to $111bn by 2015.
