MOBILE operator EE expects to hit 2m customers on its 4G tariffs by the first quarter next year, its chief executive announced yesterday.

“We should hit 2m 4G users in the next few months,” Olaf Swantee told City A.M. EE added half a million 4G customers in its third quarter bringing its total 4G customer base to 1.2m, though the increase failed to offset the overall reduction in its customer numbers.

The customer base fell as some 345,000 customers dropped its cheaper pay-as-you-go services, which EE said was in line with industry trends.

The overall reduction in subscribers meant service revenue fell 3.3 per cent in the quarter, or 0.6 per cent when removing the impact of regulatory changes such as cuts to its roaming fees.
