GREAT Britain won their first ever medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships yesterday when Kristian Thomas claimed bronze in the vault.

The 24-year-old from Wolverhampton, whose performance in the same event helped Britain earn bronze at last year’s Olympics, finished behind South Korea’s Yang Hak-Seon and American Steven Legendre.

Thomas said: “Once again, the British gymnasts have proved how good we are and I’m delighted to have contributed to that success.”

His average score of 15.233 was only marginally behind Yang’s 15.533 and Legendre’s 15.249.
