Week ahead: HSBC, Wolseley, Land Securities, Enterprise Inns

The banking sector and property-related stocks have been among the main victims of the credit crunch, so trading statements from HSBC and building supplies group Wolseley will be closely watched Monday.
In March, HSBC reported $17bn in bad debts linked to US sub-prime mortgages, but still managed to boost profits. The weak US housing market hit half year profits at Wolseley, which has seen its value fall by more than half in the past year.
Elsewhere in property, real estate giant Land Securities issues full-year results, the week after it was double-downgraded by Morgan Stanley to ‘underweight’ from ‘overweight’ in a review of the European property sector. It also saw its peer Liberty International, owner of the Covent Garden shopping centre in London, report a sharp drop in its net asset value.
Enterprise Inns’ interim results will be of particular interest following a sharp rise in the tenanted pub group’s share price after it said it was now eligible for Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) status. Worries such as the indoor smoking ban and weak consumer confidence still loom large though.
