The cryptocurrency is up more than four per cent, adding around $500 and taking it closer to its most recent record all-time high of $7,601 which it hit over the weekend.

There's been some volatility, however, despite the general bitcoin boom in recent months which has seen it break record high after record high.

It first smashed past the $7,000 mark last Friday. It is trading at $7,498 at pixel time.

And bitcoin's not the only one booming - the collective market cap of cryptocurrencies this week surpassed $200bn.
