Joe Hart - 7

Grew in confidence after uncertain start and quick off his line to make crucial save from Matavs in 84th minute.

Kyle Walker - 6

Great driving run and cross to set up Kane's late winner only partially redeemed error-strewn and blunt display.

John Stones - 6

Ease on ball makes him best the partner for more agricultural Cahill but defensive lapses crept in later on.

Gary Cahill - 6

Good defending to deny Ilicic in second half and otherwise competently dealt with Slovenia's minimal threat.

Ryan Bertrand - 5

Bright start but failed to get behind Slovenia despite linking up with dengerous Rashford on the left. Rarely tested in defence.

Eric Dier - 5

Useful defensive cover at times but sat very deep. Midfield pairing with Henderson is painfully short of penetration.

Jordan Henderson - 5

Serious questions remain about his playmaking ability. Brought energy and willing but no cutting edge.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 4

An anonymous performance on the right and no better when he swapped flanks with Rashford. Enduring a difficult spell.

Raheem Sterling - 5

Bore the brunt of roughhouse Slovenia tackling but, aside from setting up one Rashford chance, nullified too easily for No10.

Marcus Rashford - 7

Once again England's most inventive attacker and most likely to find a gap. Wasted clear chance with casual finish.

Harry Kane - 8

Toiled indefatigably on scraps all night until he finally got a half-chance and made it count. World class goalscorer.

Subs

Jesse Lingard (Oxlade-Chamberlain, 62) - 6: arrival preceded good team spell; Michael Keane (Sterling, 85): negligible impact.
