Spire was hit by charges relating to malpractice claims

Spire Healthcare has appointed Justin Ash as its new chief executive officer, the FTSE 250 firm announced today.

Ash, who will take up his duties on 30 October, was until recently the CEO of Oasis Healthcare – a post which he held for nine years. Prior to this, he was managing director of Lloyds Pharmacy.

Earlier this month, Spire saw its shares dip as much as 25 per cent after it revealed first-half profits plunged because of a legal settlement. The firm announced it would contribute £27.2m to a fund to compensate patients of Ian Paterson, a former breast surgeon at Spire hospitals facing jail time for carrying out operations on patients he wrongly diagnosed.

A £37m compensation was agreed for victims of the rogue surgeon today.

Spire’s shares closed down 1.86 per cent at 222p.
