An axe-wielding scooter gang tried to smash their way into a jewellery store on Fenchurch Street this morning.

The masked gang of three tried to break giant panes of glass in the display windows at the Mappin & Webb store in the City at 10am. The robbers threatened to attack a passerby, who tried to intervene to stop them, with an axe before speeding off on their scooters.

The gang failed to steal any items from the store and nobody was hurt.

A City of London Police spokesman said: “We were called at 10.07am to a report of an attempted robbery from a shop in Fenchurch Street (EC3).
