Manager Jose Mourinho has hailed Nemanja Matic as the perfect fit for him and Manchester United after completing the Serbia midfielder’s £40m transfer from former club Chelsea.
Matic, who turns 29 on Tuesday, has signed a three-year contract with the option of another season after agreeing to reunite with Mourinho, who took him to Stamford Bridge for £21m in 2014.
“Nemanja is a Manchester United player and a Jose Mourinho player. He represents everything we want in a footballer; loyalty, consistency, ambition, team player,” said the Portuguese.
“I would like to thank him for his desire to join us because without that, it would be impossible to have him here. I am sure our players and supporters will love him. A big welcome to our new No31.”
Matic looked increasingly likely to leave Chelsea after the Premier League champions acquired Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco in a £40m deal earlier this month.
“I am delighted to have joined Manchester United. To work with Jose Mourinho once again was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he said.
“I have enjoyed my time at Chelsea and would like to thank the club and the fans for their support. I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and to start training with them.”
Matic is United’s third signing of the summer, after £75m striker Romelu Lukaku and £31m centre-back Victor Lindelof. Mourinho has indicated that he wants one more, with Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic a target.
