Simpsons and Futurama fans, take note: the two cartoons' creator, Matt Groening, has been commissioned to create a new series for Netflix.

Last night the company said it had asked Groening to produce 20 episodes of Disenchantment, which it described as an "adult animated comedy fantasy series". Got that?

"In Disenchantment, viewers will be whisked away to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools," it said.

The series will feature British comedians Noel Fielding and Matt Berry, as well as Futurama stalwarts John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche and Tress MacNeille, who has also starred in The Simpsons. Simpsons and Futurama exec producer Josh Weinstein will also join in.

“Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.," said Groening yesterday.

The first 10 episodes of the new show will be launched on Netflix next year.
