Major work on Baker Street two-way system gets underway tomorrow with Paddington and Marylebone expected to be busier than usual

Works get underway tomorrow to convert Baker Street and Gloucester Place to two-way traffic, continuing until early 2019.

Both will still run one-way until early 2019 and stay open, with the works done in phases to minimise disruption, though Transport for London (TfL) has warned some roads will be significantly busier than usual.

As for travel affected, Baker Street station will be open, and cyclists will be able to use Baker Street and Gloucester Place, though TfL said they may prefer to use other roads.

The area may well be busier than usual for cars, taxis, and coaches, so TfL advises leaving more time for the journey.

Expect longer journey times on bus routes along Baker Street and Gloucester Place, and Marylebone Road.

  • 74/N74 - first and last stops will change from Monday 24 July to mid-November. Towards Putney, buses start from stop F on Baker Street, near York Street. Towards Baker Street, buses terminate at stop W on Glentworth Street

  • 139 and 189 - will be diverted from Lisson Grove at the junction of Rossmore Road. Rossmore Road eastbound and Baker Street (between Rossmore Road and Marylebone Road) will not be served

The project is led by Westminster City Council and TfL, with an aim of discouraging high speeds by returning two-way flow. The area will also be made more pedestrian-friendly by reducing street clutter and widening pavements.

There will also be better interchanges between routes and some moved fully to Baker Street in order to directly serve commuters.

Councillor Robert Davis, deputy leader and cabinet member for business, culture and heritage at Westminster City Council said:

The highway improvements will benefit pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and the streetscape will be revamped with more trees and upgraded street lighting making Baker Street and the wider Marylebone neighbourhood a more pleasant place to spend time in.
