Britain's Chris Froome believes he is going from strength to strength after increasing his lead on the Tour de France's first day in the Alps.

The defending champion finished third on the 183km stage from La Mure to Serre Chevalier, in which former ski jumper Primoz Roglic was first across the line after a solo attack.

Froome now enjoys a 27-second cushion over second and third place riders Rigoberto Uran and home favourite Romain Bardet, as his previous nearest rival Fabio Aru lost time, slipping from second to fourth position overall.

“In a Grand Tour, it's the third week that really tests everyone. Personally, I felt a lot better than in the Pyrenees one week ago,” Froome said.

I didn't want to get into the same situation as last week when some general classification riders went up the road and nobody wanted to chase. My legs felt good so why not keep everyone in check?

British hopeful Simon Yates saw his lead in the white jersey cut by South African Louis Meintjes to two minutes 28 seconds. The Bury-born rider, who is looking to emulate his twin brother by winning the young rider competition, dropped one place to seventh overall.

On Thursday, the 2,360m mountain-top finish of the Col d’Izoard awaits the peloton – the last of the high mountains of the 2017 Tour.

Froome said: “Tomorrow up the Izoard, it'll be just about the legs.”
