Barclays has signed up Royal Mail’s outgoing finance chief to join its board as a non-executive director.

Matthew Lester will take up his position on 1 September following his departure from Royal Mail after its annual general meeting on tomorrow.

Lester also currently serves on the boards of Capita and Man Group as a non-exec.

He has been chief financial officer of Royal Mail since 2010 and was group finance director of Icap prior to this, between 2006 and 2010.

Lester, a chartered accountant, began his career at Arthur Andersen and Kleinwort Benson and also went to work for Diageo.

Barclays chairman John McFarlane said:

I am pleased to announce Matthew’s appointment to the Barclays board. He will bring strong financial skills as well as experience of the financial services sector. He is a very welcome addition to the Barclays board.
