Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed that the German champions have dropped their interest in signing Arsenal contract rebel Alexis Sanchez this summer.

The Bavarians last week concluded a two-year loan deal for Colombia’s James Rodriguez from Real Madrid, a capture which Rummenigge admits ends his side’s interest in Sanchez, whose Arsenal contract expires next summer.

“I don’t know what Sanchez has said but we are no longer involved,” he said. “We are in agreement with the coach [Carlo Ancelotti] and we won’t be doing another deal for an attacker. That makes no sense.”

Former Arsenal winger Robert Pires, meanwhile, who still trains with the Gunners, believes Monaco midfielder and fellow Frenchman Thomas Lemar would be a perfect fit for the north Londoners. Arsenal have had several offers for the 21-year-old turned down this summer.

“I love him as a player,” said Pires. “Lemar is the kind of player who can make a difference. He has the right profile to play for Arsenal, definitely. I hope for him and for Arsenal that it happens.”
