SANDOWN understandably takes centre stage this weekend, but there’s some decent action at Haydock Park where the big betting race is the Old Newton Cup (3.15pm).
The money has been pouring in for Sir Michael Stoute’s Shraaoh all week, but he’s only won one of his seven career starts and I’m happy to leave him alone at just 7/2.
Brorocco is an interesting contender. He was really unlucky at Epsom last time and a more conventional track should suit him down to the ground.
The problem for me is the step up to 1m4f, as he’s very keen and might just struggle to get home.
This doesn’t look the strongest of renewals and I have a feeling those at the top of the handicap might hold sway.
My first selection is DYLAN MOUTH for Marco Botti, whose horses have been in much better form recently.
The six-year-old put in some solid performances in Dubai in the spring and this time last year he was contesting Group One races.
He’s now down to a mark of 104 and is a big each-way price at 20/1.
I also like the look of SOLDIER IN ACTION at 12/1, who might be able to give Mark Johnston his third win in this race in the past five years.
Although disappointing at Royal Ascot, he was an impressive winner on Derby day and is the type of horse his trainer excels with.
No trainer is in better form than Roger Varian at present, so make sure you back AJMAN PRINCESS in the Group Two Lancashire Oaks (2.40pm) at 5/1 with 188BET.
The ground was too soft for her over course and distance last month and she looks the value against Abingdon who is pretty short at just 2/1.
