Enigmatic Slovakian sprinter Peter Sagan lunged over the line in today’s third stage of the Tour de France, with the main contenders for the general classification finishing safely in the bunch.

Team Sky’s British duo of Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas finished eighth and ninth respectively, two seconds back.

Thomas retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey, while Froome moved into second place, 12 seconds behind his team-mate. British hopeful Simon Yates was one of the few general classification contenders to lose time, dropping eight seconds.

In a testing uphill sprint at the end of the 212km stage to Longwy, it was one Froome’s main rivals, Australian Richie Porte, that made an initial late break for the line.

But he was hauled back in by Sagan, Greg Van Avermaet, Dan Martin and Michael Matthews, which took the top four places.

Sagan appeared to flounder in the dying moments as he accidently unclipped from his shoe bindings while in the lead. But he quickly rectified the situation to take his eight career Tour de France stage.

Renowned for his off the bike jokes, Sagan said afterwards:

What is pressure? I don't know what it is.

At the end I did unclip, I don't know why. I was thinking 'what's going on?'. I was unlucky but I managed to go again and I won. I'm delighted.
