TODAY’S action at Happy Valley gets underway with Race 1 (12.15pm), a Class 5 contest over 1m3f.

This type of race is for the lowest rated horses in Hong Kong and is not a race for high stakes. Most of these horses are inconsistent, coming to the end of their careers, or simply not very good.

Number three Eastern Prowess should be one of the market leaders, having chased home a subsequent winner over nine furlongs at the Valley last time, and who is bred to appreciate this step up in distance.

It may, however, be worth taking a chance with unpredictable number four PREMIUM CHAMPION, who finally showed a glimmer of promise when a one-paced fifth last month.

The six-year-old, who won over 10 furlongs at Sha Tin a couple of seasons back, has always been highly-regarded by connections, and finally has a chance to repay their faith.

It’s also worth noting when top jockey and former champion Zac Purton teams up with successful trainer Caspar Fownes – nicknamed ‘King of the Valley’ – the combination have an impressive strike-rate over the years, and have struck six times this season.

The Trio is a popular bet in Hong Kong and is also available to bet on in the UK - just name the first, second and third in any order.

With little to choose between a number of horses both on form and staying the distance in this race, it could pay to take a chance and select five horses (10 bets) with the chance of an attractive pay-out.

Numbers one Amritsaria, two Je Pense, three Eastern Prowess, four Premium Champion and eight Always Wongchoy are my selections. Good luck!
