When Victoria Beckham received her first pay cheque as Posh Spice, she spent the money on a pair of white sling-back loafers. Ironically, they were Wannabe loafers designed by a certain Patrick Cox, who was the final word in shoes in the 1990s.
These days, he’s more likely to be seen strolling around Little Venice with his bulldogs, Caesar and Brutus, than gracing Europe’s catwalks, though his creations appeared in the V&A’s “Shoes: Pleasure and Pain” exhibition in 2015.
Now, he’s flogging a Cox design that’s closer to home. When he moved from Notting Hill in 2003, Cox says he was – and still is – a self-confessed “W postcode snob”, yet he wanted to live somewhere quieter and removed from the fashion set.
“When I moved here I thought, ‘What the hell have I done? I’ve moved to suburbia’”, he says. “But everyone says hello to me and my dogs, it’s all very residential. It just flies under the radar.”
For those of us from real suburbia, Maida Vale is a sleepy, but central location. Cox’s house on Lanark Road is less than 10 minutes away from Maida Vale Tube station, the boutiques and cafes of Clifton Road, and the restaurants of Little Venice.
Aside from the village lifestyle, Cox is first and foremost a designer and wanted a blank canvas. The house was a four bedroom, semi-detached unlisted Victorian villa with few original features when he bought it, but now it’s totally open plan. “It was in excellent condition, it was just uninspiring,” he says. “I basically made each floor one room. I’m a single guy, so I just thought, ‘Who am I doing this for?’

“When I bought this, I knew I was going to stay awhile, so I knew that if I skimped on materials, the only person that would suffer would be me, so I put in the best parquet and marble. I’m happy I did because they last forever, look brilliant and add value to the place.”
Over 18 months, it was turned into a modern bachelor pad. The ground floor is a 27ft reception room and home-working space flooded with natural light. The lower ground floor is devoted to entertaining, with a kitchen, dining room, front patio and back garden.
The entire first floor is given over to a master bedroom and ensuite bathroom, and guests can stay in the second bedroom on the top floor – if they can find room. “The top floor is my wardrobe! I mean, it’s insane to have that many clothes and shoes, but that’s my job.”
Though plans for a swimming pool were shelved – “I thought, who am I kidding?’ – the south-west facing garden has a BBQ/dining space surrounded by meticulously-crafted topiary. Inside, antiques and classical sculpture add intrigue around stylish furnishings, reflecting Cox’s obsession with the first Napoleonic empire, butterflies and bulldogs.
Cox has become so enamoured with his laidback lifestyle that he’s selling up to move to Ibiza. “I’m going to chill out even more,” he says. If you’re looking for a designer pad with real fashion credentials, there’s nowhere else you wanna be.
