Liverpool 1, Crystal Palace 2

Former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke scored twice against his old club as Crystal Palace took a huge step towards securing their Premier League status at Anfield.

Playmaker Philippe Coutinho fired Liverpool ahead but Palace equalised just before half-time when Benteke finished a counter-attack and the Belgium international, who endured a miserable campaign on Merseyside last season, exposed the hosts’ weakness at set pieces when he headed the winner 16 minutes from time.

Palace’s sixth win in eight games lifted them to 12th, seven points above the bottom three with five fixtures remaining.

Liverpool remain third but their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League are no longer in their own hands, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal all in striking distance if they win matches in hand.

Coutinho long-range free-kick put Jurgen Klopp’s side in front in the 24th minute and took the in-form Brazil star’s tally to four goals in five games.

Benteke converted Yohan Cabaye’s centre to level and secured Palace’s third successive league win at Liverpool with his fifth goal in five games.
