You may have heard there's going to be some bumper strike action tomorrow, as the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union holds walkouts on Southern rail, Northern and Merseyrail.

Talks between the RMT and train operators to ward off industrial action broke down earlier this week.

Now you may also have twigged Saturday is the day of the Grand National and for those planning to attend, there could be travel disruption on the horizon as many services in the north will be cancelled.

Southern's parent firm Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) said it would run a near-normal service, while Merseyrail has revised its timetable to prioritise those travelling to Aintree, and Northern said it expects to run around a third of its normal services.

Passengers have been warned that alternative rail routes, as well as buses, trams and roads in South Yorkshire are likely to be busier as a result of the strikes.

But travel search engine Gopili has also compiled some transport alternatives to ensure you're not left hanging furlong. And even if a train journey looks doable, you might fancy saving up to splash the cash when you're at the racecourse, in which case a cheaper coach trip might be preferable.
