Former world No1 Roger Federer revelled in extending his stunning start to the season after beating old foe Rafael Nadal in straight sets to be crowned Miami Open champion.
A 6-3, 6-4 win handed Federer the third Miami Open title of his career and 91st overall, whilst victory built on his Australian Open triumph in January and last month’s Indian Wells success.
The 35-year-old has won 19 of his 20 matches in 2017 and his upturn in form will see the Swiss rise to No4 in the world rankings.
“The dream continues,” said Federer. “It’s been a fabulous couple of weeks. What a start to the year. Thank you to my team and all who have supported me, especially in my more challenging times last year.”
Nadal, who has now lost in five Miami Open finals, said: “It’s disappointing. Every time I have stood here I get the smaller trophy.”
