Leeds-based low-cost airline Jet2 has ramped up its growth plans with the launch of flights and holidays from London Stansted to the likes of Alicante and Lanzarote.
Since going on sale in September, the company has added more routes and aircraft to the programme and will fly to 27 destinations from Stansted airport, including Alicante, Ibiza, Rhodes, Malaga, Zante, Gran Canaria and Crete.
Andrew Cowan, Stansted Airport’s chief executive said: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome the first Jet2.com passengers to London Stansted as they jet off on the airline’s first ever flights from the airport on brand new aircraft.
"This is the start of what we believe will be a very successful partnership, providing people from across London and the east of England with a fantastic range of great value, quality holidays and a wide choice of flight-only options to many European hotspots from their local airport.”
Jet2 flights and package holidays from Jet2holidays now span nine UK bases, as it has also just launched at Birmingham Airport. From there, it will to 23 destinations.
In January, low-cost Irish carrier Ryanair launched nine new routes from London Stansted, though it has repeatedly stressed Brexit will mean the airline pivots growth away from the UK during this period of uncertainty.
Chief commercial officer David O'Brien said the airline will "do the prudent thing" and "continue a modest growth path in the UK", while being prudent about capacity allocation in the UK, and also look at where it expands elsewhere.
