West London is the richest place in the European Union says the European Commission, surprising precisely nobody.

The UK contains four of the top 20 wealthiest regions by GDP per capita, with East London the second most affluent part of Britain.

West London had wealth 20 times higher than the poorest region in the EU, Severozapaden in northern Bulgaria in 2015, according to new data measuring relative wealth in 2015.

West London’s wealth is 5.8 times higher than the EU average, more than double the level of the next-wealthiest region, Luxembourg.

The West also beats the East’s wealth by more than three times.

The other British regions to make the top 20 are North Eastern Scotland, which is pumped up by the North Sea oil wealth around Aberdeen, and London’s commuter favourite: the Home Counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Only Germany had more regions in the top 20, with five to the UK’s four.

Meanwhile the poorest regions of the EU are dominated by its newest members. Bulgaria and Poland both contain five of the 20 poorest regions. Hungary contains four.

However, the second poorest region in the EU is Mayotte, a French territorial island in the Indian Ocean between Mozambique and Madagascar, with average wealth only a third of the EU average.
