Wicketkeeper John Simpson underpinned Middlesex’s victory assault with an unbeaten 89 as the English title winners secured a dramatic one-wicket triumph on the final day of the Champion County clash against the MCC.

Set a target of 305, success was in the balance as Middlesex were reduced to 242-7 before Simpson steered the London club home.

The MCC appeared on course for the win after Somerset seamer Craig Overton claimed a hat-trick, snaring the wickets of Stevie Eskinazi, James Franklin and James Harris. Simpson was not the sole contributor to the Middlesex cause as opener Nick Gubbins and former England batsman Nick Compton both struck half-centuries.

Aside from the three wickets scooped by Overton, Hampshire leg-spinner Mason Crane enhanced his burgeoning reputation by returning figures of 4-95.

Middlesex had earlier made light work of the MCC tail as seamer Tom Helm accounted for both Overton and then Jack Leach as the invitational outfit were reduced to 151-9, with Yorkshire’s Liam Plunkett unfit to bat.
