Businesses can breath a sigh of relief - the trend of trying to emulate Google's particular brand of work environment with bean bags, slides, hot desking and food freebies might just be over.

The tech company has slipped out of the top 10 best places to work list for the first time, coming 13th in the annual ranking by Glassdoor based on the feedback of employees.

Instead of the usual top tech firms, infamous for their favourable benefits and trendy offices, it's Expedia taking the lead in the most satisfying place to work stakes, being crowned top for the second year in a row.

The rest of the top five is rounded out by surprise companies which might not necessarily spring to mind but are clearly keeping their staff happy and motivated.

Arm climbed to second place from seventh last year, followed by two new entrants - services company HomeServe and engineering firm Mott MacDonald - while Hays slipped to the fifth best place to work in the UK from second last year.

So what is it that keeps Expedia employees so happy?

"One of the main reasons our employees love working here is they are given a voice to directly shape our path and are invested in our success," said the travel firm's senior vice president for retail and brand, Gary Morrison.

"We empower everyone at all levels to share their ideas and test and learn new ways to make the travel experience better, which, in turn, fosters a creative work environment."
