We've all suspected that the annual wedding season puts us out of pocket, but thanks to research from American Express we know just how much it's going to cost us.

Guests are set to spend almost an average week's salary, £479, on each wedding they attend this summer – which is just £24 less than the UK's average take-home wage.

Gifts are the most expensive part of wedding costs, coming in at £102 on average in the 2016 celebration season.

Slow-cookers, bee houses and Nutribullets – all costly investments – featured on a list of the most popular wedding gifts earlier this year, published by John Lewis.

Travel is the second most expensive outgoing, at £94, while outfits, accommodation and hen and stag dos cost £75, £74 and £58 on average respectively.

Jenny Cheung, director at American Express said:

While a wedding was once considered extremely costly for the bride's father, our study shows that guests face a significant bill.

With this in mind, it's never been more important to get your finances in order so you can have fun when it comes to the big day.
