Londoners spend on average over £6,000 on their jobs each year just getting to and from work, as well as buying work-related items, new research has shown.

The study by health consultancy firm Protected revealed that Londoners spend an average of £6,100 per year, before employees even get to the office or workspace.

"Commuters into big cities are the hardest hit, with workers paying out hundreds of pounds every month, usually to find themselves standing on a packed peak-hours service, paying peak-hours fares," Protected spokesperson Mark Hall said.

The research also shows that women are worse off than men, as society expects them to have a bigger collection of clothes.

And it's also bad news for those who have just come benefits or are in part-time work, as the cost is particularly burdensome on them.

Unsurprisingly, workers have to fork out the most for their commute, which can cost up to £5,000.

Perhaps its time to ask your boss for that raise.
