It's that time of year when exam results are due and the thought of future studies and careers are crossing the minds of thousands of teenagers - and their parents, of course.

With such a bewildering array of choices to be made, rankings are one of the most useful tools to guide decisions, and there's a new National Student Survey to take note of.

The survey looks at student satisfaction across the UK's universities and higher education institutes, as well as specialist schools such as art and veterinary schools.

It found that despite rising tuition fees, students' satisfaction is growing, with 86 per cent saying they are happy with their course in areas such as academic support, learning resources and personal development.

Here, we've collated the top 10 universities, excluding specialists, which are rated the most satisfying places to study.

Top 10

1. The University of Keele

2.  The University of East Anglia

3. The University of Surrey

4. The University of Essex

5. University of Winchester

6. University of Oxford

7. The University of Lancaster

8. University of Newcastle

9. Bangor University

10. Coventry University

Specialist schools performed particularly well however, with Keele pushed into third place behind medical schools in Brighton and Sussex, and Hull and York, if they are included. The addition of the Courtauld Institute of Art, Harper Adams University (for agriculture) and the Royal Veterinary College to the top 10 based on satisfaction scores would also push Oxford to number 11 in the ranking.
