A masked mob of more than 400 partygoers attacked police in Hackney late on Saturday night, pelting officers with bottles, bricks and other items after officers were called to reports of a large party.

The Met's territorial support group, dog units and police helicopter all attended the incident just before midnight at Sandford Court and Bethune Road, where many of the group were wearing face masks the police said.

"A number of residents had contacted police to complain about the noise levels at the party and it was for this reason that officers attended. To be confronted by hundreds of people and attacked in this way is wholly unacceptable," said detective chief inspector Cath Edginton said.

Several fights broke out among those attending the party, which officers managed to disperse along with the crowds by 2am. A knife was found after a search of the area, however, no arrests have been made.

"It is fortunate that none of my officers were injured. I would also like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who witnessed the events or has information about the people responsible to contact the police," said Edington.

A local neighbourhood watch group posted video of the incident on Twitter.
