Shoppers from London and the south east most confident in UK
CONSUMERS in London are the second most confident in the UK, new figures show, while optimism across the country fell slightly over the last month.
The consumer confidence index published today by YouGov and the Centre for Economics and Business Research dropped to a score of 112.1 in June from last month’s 113.7.
Despite the dip it remains well above the neutral level of 100. It is also in line with pre-recession levels and far above its financial crisis trough of 68. Regionally, London scored 117.8, second to the south east. The lowest levels of consumer confidence were in the north east, which scored 103.7 and was followed by Wales, Scotland and the north west.
“The discrepancy in consumer confidence between the regions is startling. While many people in the south and east of England are reaping the rewards of growth, those in the north, Wales and Scotland are struggling for economic momentum,” said Stephen Harmston of YouGov.
