The exit poll made grim reading for the Liberal Democrats, and so have the first results. The party lost its deposits in the first three seats declared tonight, and the losses are still coming, with the cost racking up.
These results may be a bit embarrassing for the candidates concerned, but it does not really matter for their party’s overall hopes. The Lib Dems have focused ruthlessly on the 60-odd seats they believe are winnable, mostly those that they hold, and have practically ignored everything else. Money and activists have just been pushed into the key areas.
Until the seats that they hold are declared, we will not know if they really are on course for a wipeout.
