NAKED WINES is branching out into olive oil, after it raised £25,000 in a crowdfunding initiative to back production of the culinary staple by a star winemaker.

The company, which was snapped up by London-listed Majestic Wines last month for £70m, tapped customers who were keen to fund a batch of oil made by Franck Massard.

The vintner was voted Naked Wines’ winemaker of the year in 2013, and has a sideline producing Catalan olive oil for friends and family.

Naked Wines’ UK managing director Eamon Fitzgerald said: “Franck has always made his incredibly delicious oil in tiny quantities for friends and family – the missing ingredient to make it commercially viable was cash up front.”

Naked Wines helps to fund independent winemakers, and its 250,000 customers fund different projects.
