Four fire engines were called to the scene of a fire in Great Portland Street at lunchtime, after black smoke appeared to spew from the top of a building currently being refurbished.

At 12.30pm, the London Fire Brigade tweeted that it had received 35 999 calls regarding the fire, which it said had been caused in a lift motor room on the roof of the building in Mayfair. Later, it added that the blaze was under control.

The blaze follows a week-long power blackout in Holborn, after an underground fire raged for several days.

At the beginning of this month 2,000 people were evacuated from offices around Kingsway as flames erupted from underneath the pavement.

Witnesses posted tweets showing smoke coming from the building in Mayfair today.
