Twitter users experienced widespread outages yesterday afternoon.

In a blog post published overnight, the service admitted that some users had been unable to sign in to Twitter between 4am and 9.25am Pacific Standard Time - that's between midday and 5.25pm UK time.

The glitch largely affected Android users, signing them out on their devices and leaving them unable to sign back in.

Users speculated that the glitch had been caused by a bug which led Twitter's servers to think it was 29 December 2015.

Twitter said:

This issue was due to a bug in our front-tend code, which has been patched. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.
