World Cup in brief

Spain plane struck by lightning
SPAIN suffered another shock following their first-round elimination when the plane carrying the squad home was hit by lightning yesterday. The Iberia flight to Madrid was struck shortly before landing and nobody was hurt. Spain, who arrived in Brazil as one of the favourites having won their last three major international tournaments, were beaten to a place in the last 16 by Group B rivals Holland and Chile.

Henry tips new Bleus for glory
FRENCH World Cup winner Thierry Henry believes the current crop is good enough to emulate the trophy-lifting class of 1998. Les Bleus sit three points clear going into their final Group E game against Ecuador tonight, having beaten Honduras and thrashed Switzerland, and former Arsenal striker Henry said: “This generation really does have the quality to do well and lift trophies. I hope they do it quite quickly.”
